A recent UN report noted that Afghanistan is on a ‘countdown to catastrophe’ without urgent humanitarian relief, revealing a 37 per cent surge in the number of Afghans facing acute hunger since April 2020. Those at risk include 3.2 million children under five, who are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition by the end of the year, 1 million of whom risk – without immediate life-saving treatment – dying from severe acute malnutrition (https://news.un.org/en/story/2021/10/1103932).
Afghanistan has yet again experienced significant turmoil and the nation is in dire need. Our Bayat Foundation team on the ground in Afghanistan has been actively assisting thousands of displaced families (IDPs) since mid-August, distributing food, carpets, water, baby formula, blankets, and other essential necessities which have been purchased in-country to meet this growing need.
However, the need is rapidly growing. While Afghans wait to see what the future holds, they need immediate assistance. The cost of food has risen; unemployment has escalated; families are unable to access their bank accounts; and many families have been displaced from their homes. These challenges have left millions of Afghans unable to meet their everyday needs and has led many to desperation.
With a harsh winter on its way, Afghans will need even more assistance to prevent a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe. Winters in Afghanistan are extreme – temperatures plummet, snow and ice cover large parts of the country each year, and without food and shelter, displaced Afghans, including hundreds of thousands of children, will face unimaginable hardships. We need to help NOW! Our team on the ground has already begun distributing food in many parts of Afghanistan – including Kabul, Mazar-e Sharif, Herat, and Kandahar, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. According to the World Food Programme, 18.8 million Afghans are already facing hunger and this number is expected to increase to 22.8 million by March of 2022 if we do not act fast enough – that is 55% of the population!
The Bayat Foundation’s “We Give So They May Live” campaign will raise funds to enable us to further expand operations in Afghanistan and nourish the lives of those at-risk displaced Afghan refugees and others who are victims of a collapsing economy, national drought, and COVID related health and economic challenges.
Your financial support will allow the foundation to serve, feed, clothe, and provide basic medical care to thousands of mothers, children, and families who have no other means of sustaining their lives. It also allows us to continue the completion of the new Bayat maternal and early childhood health hospital in Kabul, a facility that will feature specialized clinics to diagnose and treat women’s cancer, treat burns, and help those affected by obstetric fistula.
